Growing daffodils indoors

The different ones white daffodil crops ( N. papyraceus ) require no preparation and are rarely unsuccessful when grown indoors. They bloom 4 to 6 weeks after planting. Starting the planting at 2- to 4-week intervals will keep the flower show indoors all winter long.

When we receive the bulbs, we should open the bags immediately to allow air to reach the bulbs. If we decide to store the bulbs, they should be kept at room temperature in a dark place for a maximum of 4 to 6 weeks.

• Growing in gravel and water

They don't need soil to grow, and the easiest way to grow them is in loose stones or gravel with a little water . To do this, choose a glass or ceramic container without a hole in the bottom. If you opt for clear glass, it will be easier to see the water line and avoid overwatering.

There is Many options are available for stones . Washed gravel, marble, glass, or aquarium stone are some easy-to-find examples. We fill a few inches of stone at the bottom of the container, then firmly push the bulb onto the stones. We add a few more stones, making sure to leave at least 50% of the bulb outside the stones.

We add water until it reaches the bottom of the bulb, but no higher, because if we allow it to sit in water, it will rot. The bulb only needs to be near the water so the roots can anchor it as they grow around the stones. It's a good idea to check from time to time to see if more water is needed.

In about 4 to 6 weeks we will have flowers and, once wilted, the bulb will not grow back, so we have to discard it.

• Growing in pots and soil

We can also grow bulbs in pots with soil, but in this case we must have Be more careful with watering . The soil should only be slightly moist, so it's best to use a pot or container with a drainage hole. Otherwise, be very careful and water only lightly.

When growing them in soil, it's important to moisten the substrate, but not soak it. Once prepared, place it in the pot or container you plan to use until it's three-quarters full. Next, place the bulbs on top, placing them very close together so they're almost touching. Cover the bulbs with more substrate up to the neck, leaving the tips exposed, and water thoroughly.

• Where to place Narcissus papyraceus

Whether grown in gravel or soil, ideal conditions for growing They are temperatures of 15-18ºC, with Plenty of natural sunlight . A sunny window is the perfect spot. It's a good idea to turn the pot a few degrees every day to prevent the stems from bending toward the light.

When they flower , it is advisable to move them, since, like cut flowers, the flowers of bulbs last longer if they are kept away from direct sunlight . Therefore, it is a good opportunity to place it where we want to display it when it blooms.

Sometimes, the flower stems They grow too large and fall over, possibly because they didn't get enough sunlight or the growing conditions were too warm. Even after flowering, the stems continue to grow and can't support the weight of their flowers.

I don't think this is a problem, but we can still make a cut at the bottom of the stem and place it in a vase of water, where it can last up to two weeks. Another option is to provide some support structure, as shown in some of the images, or tie a decorative ribbon or raffia thread around a group of stems to give them support. It all depends on individual taste.
